Topic: A Cultural Practice in Your Own Culture: Its Meaning, Significance and Changing Trends

1. Assignment Instructions

Each student must select one cultural practice from their own culture or community and prepare a written assignment explaining its meaning, significance, and role in society.

A cultural practice may include a festival, traditional marriage ceremony, folk dance, traditional food, dress, rituals, agricultural traditions, folk songs, traditional art, community celebrations, indigenous knowledge, or any other cultural practice followed in the student’s community.

Students are encouraged to select a practice with which they are personally familiar. They may use their own observations, family experiences, discussions with community members, books, research articles, and reliable online sources to develop their assignment.

2. What to Include in the Assignment

Your assignment should address the following questions:

  1. What is the selected cultural practice?

  2. Which community or cultural group follows this practice?

  3. What is its historical origin or background?

  4. How is the practice observed or performed?

  5. What are its cultural, social, religious, educational, or economic significances, wherever relevant?

  6. What values, beliefs, traditions, or knowledge does it communicate?

  7. How does this practice contribute to cultural identity and community relationships?

  8. How has the practice changed over time?

  9. What challenges does it face in contemporary society?

  10. Why is it important to preserve and respect this cultural practice?
